The Development Studies Program is an interdisciplinary program covering a wide range of aspects of life in developing countries, their development process and relationships with the rest of the world. The degrees, major areas of study and plans in Development Studies draw on the expertise available in the Faculty of Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. An understanding of different cultures, languages, economies, geographies and histories that characterise the developing world are essential to understanding the nature of the societies and the processes of change going on within them and central goal of the programs of Development Studies. The existence of widespread poverty, inequality, environmental degradation and other conditions pose particular problems for development. The programs and courses offered in Development Studies are designed to develop an understanding of and insights into the wide range of societies and cultures that make up the developing world and the different ways the development challenge is being viewed and addressed. The offerings available in Development Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences include:

The courses are designed to provide core courses supported by specialised elective studies in areas like development policy and management, political economy and regional studies. The Development Studies programs are designed to expose students to both the bigger picture on development and link them to local practice as well as develop specialised skills and knowledge valuable to them and prospective employers.
